I guess none of us is really surprised that Theresa May has finally gone and the most remarkable thing is that she lasted so long with an unbelievable talent to do an impression of a barnacle on a boat as many people chipped away ceaselessly until eventually the limpet fell off.
Of course it means yet more uncertainty and adds to risk with a ‘No Deal’ Brexit seeming a lot more likely and with any future PM candidate having to commit to keeping ‘No Deal’ open if they are serious about getting chosen by the selectorate. At the moment Boris is the hot favourite (the simple fact that I can just type his first name and you know exactly who he is plays to how he is probably the only Politician in the UK who has the ‘X’ Factor) and my own view is that if the Tory Party wants to see off Nigel Farage (a Politician with Castlemaine XXXX Factor !!) then choosing a Leader other than Boris is probably guaranteed to consign them to oblivion. It is not only an existential threat from The Brexit Party but also the dangers of Corbyn getting into Number 10. There are no good answers here for Stocks.

I attended the Mello Event in Chiswick on Friday and had a really enjoyable and useful day. The thing that really stood out to me was how there was such a range of ages (although sadly, the Private Investor world still has a bit of a significant challenge when it comes to gender !!) with probably the youngest being 16 or something going up to a youthful 87. It is great to see such a spectrum and it really is the case that despite there being lots of middle-aged blokes there is also a decent level of representation from the 30s and 40s in particular. It is also worth bearing in mind that these Events take place on weekdays and obviously this rules out a lot of younger people who have to work and have family commitments etc.
Later in the day @Conkers3 and myself conducted our ‘TPI Live’ session and it worked out really well. We definitely had the ‘graveyard slot’ at nearly 5pm which obviously limited the number of people attending but we still had a good group and the interactivity of getting everyone involved worked really well (the credit for this has to go to @Conkers3 for his Ringmaster skills and those who attended because the interactive nature could not have happened if everyone had just sat there like a bag of spuds). I wasn’t too sure about how well the session had gone (partly because from about half way through I started having lots of irritating muscle spasms which meant I was very distracted and had to keep stretching out my legs !!) but the feedback from the audience afterwards was really positive and I am also extremely pleased with the feedback we are getting about the Podcasts and this is borne out by the number of Listens which is starting to get very respectable (if you haven’t listened to the Podcast yet then skip over to the ‘Podcasts/Videos’ page and there are links there).
First off many thanks for all the kind comments I had back when I had to shout at the Twitter World about the grief the Technology Refresh I have undertaken in recent days has inflicted upon me. I guess a complete change of Laptop and Keyboard and big Monitor always had the potential for pain and deciding to grab a new 7 inch Tablet whilst I was in Currys was the final nail !!
I won’t dwell on it too much as I have vented big time on the Tweets but a really silly little niggle is that to an extent I can ‘touch type’ but I still need to look down occasionally for keys and functions which don’t get used all that often. Anyway, I had to replace the Keyboard because my old one had loads of keys which I had worn out and you start to forget what Letter or Number they actually type !! Throw in the fact that the ‘e’ key kept sticking so you would type ‘eeeee’ etc. and it really was time it had to go. Luckily things like Keyboards are shockingly cheap so I was happy to grab one but the challenge I am getting now is that the ‘Shift’ key is a little further to the left than on my old one – so when trying to do a Capital Letter etc. I find that you get one of these ‘\’ – I need to stretch the little finger on my left mitt a lot more !!
I was watching ‘QI’ the other night and it always makes me giggle but the bit I liked was a quote from Salvador Dali to the question, “Why don’t portraits look like the person being painted?”, to which Dali replied “Some people make no effort to resemble their pictures.”
I won’t dwell on this subject but it might be something I come back to in a future Educational Blog. The more I muck about with Stocks and Markets, the more I come to the view that there are countless trade-offs between so many aspects and one such trade-off that is very much to the forefront with how I do things is to accept that not doing much in terms of Buying and Selling Stocks can have very beneficial impacts on a Portfolio (I often hear someone saying they were forced to leave their Portfolio alone for several months and then they come back to it to find it has probably done better than if they had ‘worked’ on it as usual and basically tinkered too much with a consequent negative impact on Returns), but the trade-off is that perhaps if I was to be more active, I might make more Money. |
